Little Saigon's transformation...
Echoes and the design of ‘LITTLE SAIGON’ restaurant…
DC designer Brigitte Le was hired to transform the interior of Little Saigon restaurant - a 26 year old diner with a much needed facelift in the communal’s Falls Church block.
Le was responsible for the interior design on a shoestring budget. Little Saigon is open during the transformation which meant that the changes took place before and after hours …Le took on the challenge on April and completed on June 10.
The restaurant, which has opened for 26 years, is now owned by Chef Minh, and her family – a first generation Vietnamese- Americans. The desire is to serve authentic Vietnamese cuisine in a sentiment ambiance that brings back fond memories of the ‘old Saigon’.
‘Back into the future, Little Saigon restaurant brings us to the energy of ‘old Saigon’, endearing images of familiar people and its neighborhoods … Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception, Tu Do promenade, the famous actors we once admired,…’ said Brigitte Le
Setting the tone for the curated space, Le chose a historical street sign of ‘Little Saigon, Next Right’ from the Smithsonian's exhibit "Exit Saigon, Enter Little Saigon: Vietnamese America Since 1975" ** capture the desperate journey more than one million Vietnamese refugees made to the United States when Saigon fell in 1975, and the hope they found when they got here…as a prominent display in the main dining room.
**The exhibit 'Exit Saigon, Enter Little Saigon' opened at the Smithsonian S. Dillon Ripley Center in Washington, D.C., January 19, 2007. The show is the first Vietnamese American historical exhibit at the Smithsonian.
**Vietnamese American scholar Vu Pham as the curator w/ the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program (APAP).
